PROJECTS & DEMOLITIONS
With the capability to manage entire demolition projects from start to finish,
we handle everything from plant and equipment removals to large-scale demolitions.
Our services include site establishment, access management, demolition execution, material transportation, waste removal, site restoration, as well as comprehensive health & safety, quality management, scheduling, and contract administration.

The Macaulay project team have completed the demolition of numerous bulk storage tanks around New Zealand. In 2017 Macaulay was contracted to Exxon Mobil to demolish a large redundant fuel storage tank at the Seaview Terminal in Wellington. The tank was 27m in diameter and 15m tall. After extensive consultation with the client a suitable methodology based on the horizontal tear method was developed. The project was completed on time and as per the methodology.

TUI OIL FIELD

In May 2021 the Macaulay project team took delivery of close to 3,000 tonnes of heavy anchor chain, sea anchors and wire ropes from the failed Tui Oil Field. The chain was discharged directly onto Port Taranaki from a heavy ocean-going supply vessel. In only a week the Macaulay team cut the chain
up into manageable sections and removed it to a separate stock piling area
on the port.
One month later it was loaded direct from the port onto a bulk vessel and shipped to a steel mill in South Korea. Macaulay’s team facilitate all aspects
of such projects including organising the sale and shipping of the processed material.

Solid Energy contracted Macaulay to demolish a significant amount of above ground coal mining assets at the Huntly East and West Mines in Huntly. The project also included filling a 100 metre deep ventilation shaft with 10,000 tonnes of fill and a 300 tonne concrete capping slab.
Location: Huntly, Waikato

After dismantling Centre Ports B and C container cranes in 2005, Macaulay was contracted to dismantle and remove the Paceco D container crane.
The crane weighing just over 700 tonnes was dismantled and lowered to
the ground in large sections. At ground level it was cut down into smaller pieces for efficient removal from site. An extension of the project was the dismantling and removal of 6 container handling straddle carriers. The Macaulay team exceeded expectations, and the project was completed on time with significant financial returns for Centre Port.

Macaulay are New Zealand’s leading expert at dismantling redundant electrical transformers. We have completed an extensive number of significant transformer removal projects across New Zealand. A significant transformer project was completed in 2013. Port Taranaki purchased the
New Plymouth Power Station from Contact Energy.
Macaulay Metals purchased 5 surplus generating transformers weighing
120 tonnes each. The Transformers were broken down onsite and the steel components were loaded into containers and exported direct from site and the copper cores were sent to Macaulay’s Wellington Yard for further processing.

PROJECT
NEW PLYMOUTH
POWER STATION

Electrix subcontracted Macaulay for a major decommissioning project at the former New Plymouth Power Station. Decommissioned in 2008 and partially demolished in 2015, the site retained its generator hall, administration annex, main stack, and fully enclosed substations, which remained connected to the national grid until 2019.
We were tasked with removing all substation components, leaving the buildings empty for the new owners, Port Taranaki. The work included confined space operations, underground cable removal, dismantling suspended switchyards 17 metres high, and disposing of nine transformers, four of which exceeded 100 tonnes.
Location: New Plymouth, Taranaki
Duration: 7 Months
Metal recovered: 500 tonnes
Completed: August 2020
