Our core values
OUR TRUE
METTLE
We are perceptive and curious – we make it our business to look beyond the obvious. We take the time to understand and value people just as we do materials.
We are welcoming – this is a people business even more than it’s a metals business. We find ways to make everyone we work with feel comfortable.
We are transformative – we keep moving, evolving, learning, growing, innovating – because in a rapidly changing world, there’s no room for a company that can’t keep up.
We are positively practical – we absolutely believe that a less wasteful world is possible, and that we have a very real part to play in making that happen.
Meet our People
JEFF HARRIS
Managing Director
What was the most interesting object you recovered?
Over the 40 plus years that I’ve been in the metal recycling industry I’ve seen more fascinating objects than I can remember. From antique machinery parts to brand new items manufactured with a fault that need to be destroyed, barely a day goes by where we don’t see something interesting arrive through our gates.
RACHEL Lavis
Finance and Commercial Manager
What is your favourite part of coming to a metal recycling site every day for work?
No two days are ever the same here and we always have interesting things going on. I love that I get to use my professional qualifications and experience to really make a difference to a business which has such a positive environmental impact.
GLEN Jacobs
Operations Manager
What’s the most interesting bit of machinery at Macaulay?
The variable speed drive (VSD) used on the main motor of our shredder plant is a well-researched and thought-out electrical control system designed especially for us. We pioneered the use of VSD control technology on our main electric motor, going against the worldwide norm which is a liquid rheostat power control. This control is the first of its kind to be used on a metal shredding plant and I am proud we pushed on and took the leap into new technology.
Rebecca Green
Exports Manager
What’s your favourite memory from your time at the company?
My favourite memory of my time at Macaulay is visiting and meeting with other metal recyclers to see how their yards operate and provide opportunities for new business with them.
Justin Stevenson
National Projects Manager
What is the largest structure you have recycled?
The Huntly East Mine stands out to me. The finale of the decommissioning was the tipping of a 500 tonne rail coal loading bin. Planning and risk management was the key. 2 months of preparation for 10 seconds of demolition!
JENNI COOPER
METAL PURCHASING & SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIP MANAGER
What do you enjoy most about your job?
In an industry that’s constantly moving and evolving, relationships are everything. Whether I’m coordinating with long-time suppliers, welcoming a new supplier, or collaborating with my team, it's the human connections that make each day rewarding. There's a shared sense of purpose — we’re not just moving materials, we’re helping build a more sustainable future and at the end of the day, it’s the people who keep this industry running and they are the reason I love doing what I do.
RICCI IHAIA
WELLINGTON YARD MANAGER
What makes you a metal head?
I’ve been lucky enough to build a career seeing potential where others see scrap — because in this industry, I see the future. Backed by a sharp team and forward-thinking strategy, we turn discarded metal into opportunity and lasting value.
MaRGARET PHILLIPS
HUMAN RESOURCE ADVISOR
What makes working at Macaulay interesting?
Being a part of this vibrant Kiwi owned company; it’s the people that interest me most! We have incredibly skilled and talented staff who come from all walks of life with whom I feel privileged to know and work with.
